Google rewrites meta descriptions constantly when the original doesn't clearly match the searcher's query, is missing, is duplicated across pages, or runs too long and gets truncated awkwardly.
The fix:
keep descriptions under roughly 160 characters, make each one unique per page (no copy-pasting the same one site-wide), and make sure it actually answers what someone searching that exact phrase would want to know — not just a generic summary of the page.
